Junior And Collegiate Sailing

I began sailing at seven years old in Sabots at Coronado Yacht Club in Coronado, California. I quickly moved to the Laser and Europe Dingy and was nationally and internationally ranked. I was invited to the prestigious CISA clinic five years in a row (1998-2002) which is limited to the top 20% of sailors in the country.

Notable Awards and Regatta Results:

  • 1999 Junior Olympics in the Laser Radial - 2nd Place.

  • 1999 San Diego Association of Yacht Clubs’ Paul J. Hartley Junior Yachtsman of the Year.

  • 1999 Yacht Racing Union of Southern California Youth Excellence Award.

  • 2000 US Junior Women’s Singlehanded Championship (Leiter Trophy) - 3rd Place.

  • 2001 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship, Crozon-Morgat, France - 16th Overall.

  • 2001 Laser Radial World Championships, Barcelona, Spain.

  • 2001 Jobson’s Juniors to Watch - Sailing World.

  • 2001 San Diego Association of Yacht Clubs’ Paul J. Hartley Junior Yachtsman of the Year.

  • 2002 Pre-Olympic Test Event, Athens, Greece - 8th Overall. (Europe Dinghy)

I then attended and sailed for the University of Southern California as a varsity sailor from 2002-2006 in the CFJ and Laser Radial.

Adult Sailing

Lauren Wilson racing as skipper for the racing yacht RP52 Staghound

After college I began sailing bigger keelboats. I called tactics and served as skipper on a Reichel/Pugh 52’ boat called Staghound out of Southwestern Yacht Club between 2010-2013. We routinely won or reached the podium in our class and overall in just about every regatta we entered.

In late 2014, after a brief hiatus from sailing competitively, I returned to competitive sailing as the tactician for the Beneteau 36.7 class yacht Melokia. Aboard Melokia, we achieved the following notable results:

  • San Diego NOOD Regattas

    • 2014 - 3rd Place.

    • 2017 - 2nd Place.

    • 2018 - 3rd Place.

    • 2019 - 5th Place.

  • Southern California Yachting Association's Midwinters Regatta

    • 2018 - 1st Place. (4 bullets)

  • SDYC Yachting Cup

    • 2016 - 3rd Place.

    • 2018 - 3rd Place.

    • 2019 - 3rd Place.

  • CYC Kitty Muhl Ladies Day Regatta

    • 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 - 1st Place

    • 2014, 2015, 2023 - 2nd Place

Lauren Wilson racing aboard Beneteau First 36.7 Melokia as skipper in the Kitty Muhl regatta

In 2024, there was a scheduling snafu and I couldn’t race aboard Melokia for the Kitty Muhl regatta, so I took out a club Harbor 20 with two moms who had never sailed before and signed up for the regatta. We talked about being moms, work, and life in general while I basically single-handed the boat. We ended up winning on the water and the moms challenged me. “We won? Why aren’t you doing this competitively anymore?” I did not have a good answer for them.

That thought wouldn’t stop circling around my brain, so I decided to try it out. We bought Second Wind and I started racing the day after I took delivery of the boat - the ILCA-NA District 25 Southern California Championships at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. I got my lunch handed to me by kids who weren’t born the last time I raced an ILCA 6 competitively. But, I was not last, my tactics and skills were still there, I just needed to get into shape. So, I did.

I’m now 88 pounds lighter, far stronger, and committed to being the best among a fleet of incredible young sailors. More, I’m committed to redeveloping Corinthian values and spirit among the class. If any sailor that I’m competing with needs help, I’m going to give it to them. American sailors suffer on the international stage due to a lack of team ethos and a zero-sum cutthroat mentality. That’s not only not Corinthian, it’s self-sabotage. A rising tide lifts all boats and I’m going to prove it.
