ILCA Athlete Panel Announced: Representing the Class on a Global Stage

ILCA sailboats on the starting line of a regatta, racing to the future

It is an honor to be elected to the inaugural ILCA Athlete Panel. The International Laser Class Association is the backbone of our sport, and as the class evolves, it is vital that the decisions made at the governing level reflect the actual experience of the sailors on the water. Being selected as one of only seven representatives worldwide is a responsibility I don't take lightly.

Highlights from the feature:

  • Global Representation: The panel consists of seven sailors selected from a diverse international pool to provide direct feedback to the ILCA World Council.

  • Strategic Governance: Focuses on improving communication between the governing body and the athletes to ensure the class remains the gold standard of one design racing.

  • Athlete Advocacy: The panel serves as a formal mechanism for sailors to influence equipment standards, event formats, and class rules.

This appointment comes at a pivotal time for Second Wind Racing. My campaign has always been about more than just personal results; it’s about the standard of the sport and the path we are carving for the next generation. Serving on this panel allows me to bring a North American perspective—and the perspective of a veteran athlete—to the global stage. Balancing the rigors of Olympic training with a seat at the table in class governance reinforces the Second Wind mission: staying deeply engaged, highly professional, and committed to the excellence of the ILCA fleet.

Leadership in this sport isn't just about how you handle the boat in heavy air; it's about how you contribute to the stability and growth of the fleet when you’re off the water. I am proud to bring awareness and to represent the needs of the full fleet of 250,000+ sailors. Representing not just the perspectives of the elite athletes vying for the Olympic Games, but also the needs of Masters sailors, and those of my children and all children entering our beautiful sport.
