RAID THE NORTH EXTREME
Team Suburban RUSH - Secondwind had a great race at Raid the North Extreme. Our team came in 8th place overall. The race was held in two stages : one in the Queen Charlotte Islands and the second in the Prince Rupert area. It was a difficult 5 day race through some amazing scenary. Our team was as follows: Dean Wutke, Lina Augatis, Don Barthel, and Jordy Ydse.

Let the race begin!

Don , Jordy and Lina spot the 3500 ft peak of CP2 directrly in front of them. The team begins to set a good pace towards the peak.

Approximatly 5 hours later Dean at the summit of CP2. Teams are still close together at this point. Night begins to get closer as we tackle the difficult section to CP3 up over another mountain pass. CP1 to CP3 will take us approximatly 25 hours of trekking and a cold overnight sleep in the forest for two hours in our emergency bivy bags.

Team Suburban RUSH - Secondwind was able to pass teams on the ascent and decent of Mt. Moresby (CP 13) Day 3 of the race.

On the decent of Mt. Moresby Lina slides down the snow slope. This would be the quickest way down and only way to keep up with teams. It's not all hard work!

Don decents the lower part of Mt. Moresby. Shortly after the Mt. Moresby trek we'd arrive at CP14 for the advanced paddle that would last 13 hours and bring us into CP14b at 1:30AM. A very long cold night.

The Queen Charlottes are covered in moss and old growth.

The brutal portage of our kayaks on second to last day in the race. Over 8 hours of bushwhack lugging heavy bags on our backs. This was a test of ones will.

The portage ended and we inflated our kayaks again for the second to last paddle of the race down Work Channel and CP24.

A sight to see. CP27 on the top of Mt. Hayes with Prince Rupert and the finish line in sight after 5 days of racing.

Don Barthel, Dean Wutke, Lina Augatis, and Jordy Ydse have some champagne and receive a warm welcome from the residents of Prince Rupert at the finish line shortly before noon on Day 5 (June 30th). We finished 8th place in Raid the North Extreme.

Team Suburban RUSH - Secondwind placed 5th in the Full Moon In June 36 hour adventure race in Alberta. We finished 2 advanced sections out of 3 and completed in 35 hours and 29 minutes. Out of 25 teams to start the race we were only 12 minutes out of 3rd in the end! No major problems in this one. This race included a 2 hour class 3 white water rafting section which was a lot of fun. Special thanks to Floyd Besserer our supprot crew that kept us in the race. For more pictures <click here> For a video run through of the course <click here>

Raid the North Kamloops Race Report:
Racers: Dean Wutke, Jordy Ydse, Sarah Goring, and Steve Keeley. Support Crew: Shawn Leclair, Brian Phillips, Erin Creak, and Chris Lister

Steve repelling off into Adams Lake at CP6
The race was a great challenge. We enjoyed racing with each other and getting to know our new Aussie team-mate, Steve.

Pre-race navigation test
The start was a two hour drive which we almost didn’t make, but arrived with 10 minutes to spare. Shawn always keeping us on track and letting us know “3 minutes until race start!”

Start of the race 11:55pm - near North Barrier Lake
The race started straight away at midnight with a bushwhack trek, and soon after a stream crossing where Steve led the way with no hesitation! Up to over our knees right away. little did we know how much coastineering we had in front of us. We needed to travel along North Barrier Lake for about 3 km to CP1. According to the maps there didn't look to be any beach along route so we bushwhacked for about 30 minutes, until Steve and Sarah discovered the water route was much faster. Sarah likes water!

Sarah and Jordy coastineering along North Barrier Lake to CP1
We moved fast along the water “coastineering”, and as teams saw us from above bushwhacking away in the forest they dropped down as well and raced along the water. We passed three or four teams and they all moved to the water after us. Eventually there were 20 or so headlamps on our tail splashing towards us in the night. There were some house boats out in the lake, they must have wondered what the heck was going on!

Jordy and Steve shortly after dawn on the plateau before finding CP2

Sarah, Steve and Jordy - finding a faster route via a old road
We made some mistakes and one was early on the first trek navigation to CP2. We couldn't find an old road that was on the map. As dawn hit we were still finding our way. Our team clawed back as usual and the a great part was passing teams after the first bike, then 3 teams on the ropes and paddle section and 3 more in the TA after the paddle. That was the high for me. I believe our paddle was 5th best. We were moving great.

Early morning - Support crew with team at CP3/TA1 - trek to bike

Night time bike navigation to CP8
1am the second night at the last TA we suffered from hypothermia or something close to it. We had two of our team-mates cold and recovering in sleeping bags with the truck running to heat us up. Sarah was hit badly and I wasn't so good either. We made a long cold bike descent and then never covered up in the dead of night when we stopped at the CP to discuss the advanced section. The TA staff wanted Sarah to stay and warm up as she was really out of it. Our support crew shined when we needed them. The second night is always the most difficult in the race and equally hard for our support. We lost 3-4 hours from a preventable mistake of not keeping warm. I must admit it was my low of the race so as team captain I wasn't pushing it. We started out for the regular course around 4:30am and climbed to the top of Mt Morrissey over looking Sun Peaks Village and the finish line. We had good energy so we said 'hi' to Team Expedition Canada and ran down the mountain. Our support was there once again and so was the finish line at 8:30am. Lots of pictures, and cheers!

Finish like after a tough night - 31 hours after race start
Overall I think we could have made fewer mistakes and could have finished the advanced in 10th, instead we moved to around 17th. However the team spirit, great racing environment and awesome support team we had surpassed any race experience I’ve had so I must say it was a great race all in all. We are happy we finished too; Jordy said he had a doubt during the 1am CP8 stop but you just got to keep going as we do!

Thanks to our sponsors - Kamloops

Stinky job of our support crew - but so many other rewards!

Race the Rockies - Check Point 6 high in Alpine! (August 27st)

The Raid the North finish line after 35 hours of racing through the beautiful Kootneys (August 21st)
Secondwind went on a adventure racing road trip and travelled to Nelson and Golden for a week. In Raid the North - Nelson we had a difficult trek, but proved quite completive through all other legs of the race. We finished 18th. Race the Rockies had us in 2nd place but later fell behind with heat exhaustion problems however we still finished respectively in 7th place team. Both races were amazing and we had great support crews, Shawn Leclair and Brian Phillips for Raid the North. Janet Shaw and Erin Creak (and friend) for Race the Rockies.
Next race this Saturday at Sea2Summit Whistler. We have recruited Magnus and Laddie for this season ending race. We are going for first this time round!
