“Grinding away Cancer” from Jordy Ydse

In Support of my Mother and BC Cancer Foundation

On November 18th, 2006…

I will be doing the Grouse Grind to raise money so I can assist my mother as well as the BC Cancer Foundation in their fight against cancer. However, I will not just be doing the Grouse Grind once; I will be doing the Grouse Grind continuously from when the gates open in the morning until the gates close in the evening in an effort to raise $10,000.

IF through your support, I am able to raise just $1 over my goal of $10,000 I will voluntarily go back the following day, November 19, 2006, and once again continuously hike The Grouse Grind all day.

I am raising money to help my Mother with the costs of fighting this disease, to reduce her financial burden and worry so she can concentrate on getting better. Partial proceeds will be donated to the BC Cancer Foundation for ovarian cancer research at the BC Cancer Agency.

My Mother’s battle with cancer began when she was diagnosed with progressive form of ovarian cancer just over four months ago. Due to the fact she had a stage 3 progressive moving tumor the surgeons decided it too risky to do surgery right away and wanted to try to shrink the tumor with chemotherapy treatment. She is just had her fifth chemotherapy session this week and is already seeing the severe effects of the chemotherapy on her body. She has more chemotherapy sessions to endure before her surgery scheduled in December at the BC Cancer Agency in Vancouver.

My Mother has to somehow cope with the costs of the medication and travel, plus everyday costs such as a mortgage, car, and food with no medical benefits and only 14 weeks of Employment Insurance which has expired. There is no one to care for her, so my stepfather, currently the sole breadwinner, will have to take time off work without pay to care for her after the operation, which will only add to their financial burden.

About The Grouse Grind

The Grouse Grind is a 2.9km uphill staircase, gaining 2800 feet in elevation; deservingly nicknamed “Mothers Natures Stairmaster”. If anyone has done the very famous route to the top of Grouse Mountain, you will know what I am putting myself up against. This is no easy task, nor is the fight against cancer. Please help my Mother, BC Cancer Foundation and myself in our efforts.

Thank you very much for your support!

Or visit any Greater Vancouver Community Credit Union to donate.
